WHAT CONSULTANTS DO
Consultants do not edit papers; however, they guide you in understanding an assignment, writing in an academic style, and exploring best practices in various modes of communication. You can make a consultation at any point in the writing process -- from brainstorming to the final read through -- consultants can help you navigate the writing process and ensure you have all the tools you need to communicate your ideas effectively.
HOW TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT
WHAT HAPPENS IN A CONSULTATION
APPOINTMENT TYPES
Brainstorming / Planning
Not sure where to start on a project? Allow a consultant to help! Writer's need sounding boards at all stages of the writing process, and starting a new project can be particularly difficult. Consultants can walk writers through their writing prompt, assist in building structured outlines and mind-maps, and help you generate topic ideas.
Feedback
In a feedback session, a consultant focuses on providing constructive, specific guidance on a writer's project, whether it includes text, images, audio, video, or other digital elements. During the session, the consultant reviews the work with the student, highlighting strengths, identifying areas for improvement, and discussing strategies to enhance clarity, coherence, and audience engagement across all modes. The goal is to help the writer refine their message, integrate different communication modes effectively, and make intentional rhetorical choices, while encouraging reflection and revision throughout the writing process.
Accountability (or Body Doubling Session)
An accountability session provides structured time for a student to focus on completing tasks with the support of a consultant. Rather than offering detailed feedback on content, the session emphasizes maintaining focus, setting concrete goals, and sustaining productive work habits. The consultant may help the student break large projects into manageable steps, check in periodically, and celebrate progress, creating an environment that encourages consistent effort and reduces procrastination. Writers may also choose to participate in a body-doubling session, where the consultant works alongside them without providing direct feedback, offering presence and accountability to help the writer stay focused.
